It seems like every day should be one where I focus on what matters most, but I find that difficult to do in real life. Thinking about this reminds me of the story of the rich young ruler. He wanted to know what he needed to do to have eternal life, and after learning that the man kept all of the commandments, Jesus told him to sell everything that he had and follow Him. I often envy the idea of having nothing and living a life that is focused 100% on dicipleship. I say the “idea” because I recognize that the reality of that may be very different than the application.
However, discipleship while keeping up a home, a car, a business, a phone bill, a computer (and the list goes on) is also very difficult. At least in the way I think it should be done.
So today, at least, I’ll try to focus on the clear and unambiguous ways I can by like Jesus. And I will hope that focus will spill over into the rest of the week, and become a little more of my everyday routine as the rest of my alloted weeks in this world go by.
Yesterday was great. We intended to go to ***’s wrestling match in Melba, but his aunt called before we left home and told us he missed the weigh-in and wouldn’t be allowed to compete in this one. He was probably disappointed, but what a good (safe) life lesson. I’m so glad he is able to do a sport. Sports are like an education that’s fun.
So instead of that, we ended up working on the house. We spackled and wood-filled and painted, and *** came over and helped me change out our cieling fan. A friend had told me our current fan was going bad, but it turned out the dimmer switch was failing. But we weren’t able to figure that out until we had completely installed the new fan.
We also cleaned the house, and tried to scrub down some areas in the showers that were getting a lot of soap scum, That wasn’t as successful as we hoped. All in all, the day felt very satisfying.
Today we only have one hour of church because it’s our Christmas Sacrament meeting. In the afternoon Cathy has her annual extended family Christmas gathering. Kelsee and Landon arrive sometime today. Jaidyn and Kaleb arrived yesterday at his parents home. It will be nice to have kids home this week for Christmas. Hopefully we don’t cramp each other’s style too much.
Come Follow Me
I’m following my line of story collecting about people showing mercy to others.
I read a story about a german world war two pilot who decided to fly an american bomber out of german airspace.
I read this post about 4 small acts of mercy witnessed by a nun who runs an international charity for girls and women. I think reading about real life acts of goodness are so effective because they help our brains see how something might be done, and in seeing our imagination puts us in the place. We feel what it’s like, and maybe chemically get some of the same benefits in our brain as if we had been a part of it.
